adidas has been brand of the FIFA World Cup since 1970 and they will extend their presence at the quadrennial event through 2030 after announcing a new agreement today in Moscow. The date is no doubt important as the 2030 World Cup will be the centennial celebration for the quadrennial tournament.
The partnership gives adidas the right as the official partner for the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and all other FIFA events (most notable the men’s and women’s youth World Cups).
The most noticed aspect of the partnership will continue to be as the supplier of the official World Cup ball. adidas has been providing iconic balls for each World Cup since 1970. These balls have changed the way we see the soccer ball literally and figuratively.
The soccer ball was almost always a solid colored panel ball or the traditional black-and-white ball. This did not change much until the introduction of the Tango ball with its unique pattern in 1978. The look has changed over the years with the World Cup ball closely associated with each tournament.
The technology has changed over the years with the ball as well. From the all leather 32-panel leather ball used in 1970 to the single panel synthetic balls of today.
Adidas will also provide the uniforms for the World Cup volunteers as well as official licensed gear to fans around the globe.
The agreement goes beyond what can be seen on the field and to the development of the game as well. adidas has worked with the FIFA Goal and the FIFA Football for Hope adidas Exchange Programme to provide balls to federations and aid in organizing workshops and coaching seminars around the globe.
