Colombia Soccer Jersey

Colombia is returning to the FIFA World Cup for the 5th time and the first time since 1998 when they travel to Brazil next summer.  adidas is releasing new official World Cup jerseys for all their qualified federations but this one will be extra special due to the long absence of Los Cafeteros, the Coffee Growers.

The home jersey is the bright yellow of Colombia with a wide diagonal blue stripe at the top of the chest and that forms the background for the team badge and narrower stripes down the remainder of the jersey.  The ClimaCool jersey has ventilation around the arms and on the side panels of the jersey.

CONMEBOL has one of the most grueling World Cup qualifying processes.  The first games were back on October 7, 2011 and continued for over 2-years with the last game being held on October 15, 2013.  Unlike in Europe where teams are divided into groups, all the competing countries are placed in a single table and play home-and-away ties.  This year the top 4 teams earned automatic berths and the 5th place team, Uruguay, will play Jordan in an intercontinental playoff.

Colombia finished the qualifying in second place behind Argentina. They were led by Radamel Falcao with 9 goals followed by Teófilo Gutiérrez with 5 goals.

The biggest heart-break for Colombia in the World Cup came in 1994.  The South American side was considered one of the best in the world and had been picked by Pele to win the tournament.  But those dreams came crashing down when they lost to the USA in their second game of the group stage which eliminated them from the tournament.  That game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena is most remembered for Andrés Escobar’s own goal.

The best showing for Colombia came in 1990 when they advanced to the Round of 16.  They failed to advance from the group stage in 1962, their 1st World Cup appearance, and 1998.

What do you think about the new Colombia soccer jersey? How far will Los Cafeteros go in Brazil?

Check back next Thursday when adidas will reveal and make available for order the Argentina, Germany, Russia, Denmark and Japan jerseys.
