The Netherlands are feeling blue today after Nike unveiled the official 2014 away jersey. This will be the first dark blue jersey for the Oranje since 2000 and harks back to the dark blue jersey they wore at their first World Cup in 1934.
National team players Joël Veltman, Davy Klaassen and Jean-Paul Boëtius were on hand at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam to showcase the new jersey.
The jersey appears to be a solid blue at first glance but further examination shows that there is a more complex grid pattern of interlocking chevrons and is a brighter blue at the top of the jersey and slowly transitions to a darker blue with the waist hem being an imperial purple.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) the 2014 Netherlands’ jerseys features a new crest. The similar badge with a white lion and Orange background is used on the Netherlands 2014 Home Jersey.
The enlarged crest shows an orange lion on dark blue background with KNVB above the lion and the founding year 1889 and 2014 on either side of the lion.
The solid jersey has the potential for some subtle flash. The cuff has an inside orange trim that players can turn out to provide an added statement of the Clockwork Orange. A crown on top of a lion’s head of the Association crest is at the back of the v-neck collar.
Custom numbers and letters designed by Dutch typographer Wim Crouwel will be used on the jersey. The numbers have interior lines reminiscent of ones from the 1970’s and the KNVB crest will feature at the bottom of the numbers.
