This is the second in our two part series looking at all of the new kits launched during Major League Soccer’s Jersey Week 2014. You can view the first installment at this link.
All of MLS’ teams have either new home, away or third kits in 2014. They were unveiled during a series of private, public and web events leading up to the kickoff of the league’s eighteenth season this past Saturday. Here’s more of some of the uniforms that you’ll see players like Thierry Henry, Nigel Reo-Coker and Michael Bradley wearing in 2014.
New York Red Bulls Away
With Manchester City-owned New York City FC joining MLS in 2015, the Red Bulls make a statement about their ties to the Big Apple with a new alternate shirt that has the text “NEW YORK” prominently featured in gold on its front and back. The shirt may be the start of an entertaining rivalry between a club that features Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill and neighbors that might be a loan target for players on Man City’s deep roster.
Philadelphia Union Home
The Union add more gold to their home shirt in 2014 courtesy of pinstripes on its front and back. There is also a gold arc on the jersey’s back (a common feature on most of adidas 2014/15 kits) and gold added to a classic crewneck collar.
Sporting Kansas City Away
Defending champions Sporting KC get their hoops on for a Celtic-feel 2014 away shirt that combines the team’s Sporting Blue and dark indigo. A gold star is added above the jersey’s three-dimensional lenticular Sporting KC shield in recognition of the club’s 2013 league championship.
Colorado Rapids Home
The Rapids are back in their famous burgundy jersey. This year’s incarnation features the embossed Colorado “C” across the chest as well as the return of the sky blue color to the uniform via the shirt’s shoulder stripes. The kit is highlighted by vertical adidas 3-Stripes fading from sky blue to traditional burgundy on the jersey and shorts. Colorado’s state flag appears on the front jock tag with ’5280′ on the back neck, symbolizing the Mile High city.
Chivas USA Home
Since Chivas USA will be re-branded next year after being purchased from Mexico’s Chivas de Guadalajara by MLS, their 2014 home kit will be last for the Los Angeles club.
Former USA captain Carlos Bocanegra and the rest of Los Rojiblancos go out with a classic feel crewneck jersey in Chivas’ red and white vertical stripes coupled with dark blue accents throughout.
Vancouver Whitecaps Away
The Whitecaps 2014 away jersey celebrates the Canadian club’s fortieth anniversary via the use of its traditional away dark blue and the use of silver on the new kit. The latter is in honor of the silverware won by Whitecaps FC and what the club calls it winning tradition its inaugural season in 1974. Among those titles are the famous 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl, one North American Championship, four Canadian Soccer League championships, two W-League titles, two United Soccer Leagues First Division titles, and four Cascadia Cups.
FC Dallas Home
Launched under the theme “Red For 90”, FCD’s new home kit maintains the club’s well-known hooped look but with the use of a tonal red design instead of the alternating red and white bands used in the past. The new shirt was used for FC Dallas’ 3-2 season opening win over Montreal on Saturday.
Toronto FC Away
With established internationals Jermaine Defoe (England), Michael Bradley (USA) and Julio Cesar (Brazil) now on their books, TFC have gone with an alternate kit that is a unique new shade of Onyx featuring World Cup-inspired design lines and nine columns of maple leaves. Another new design element is the metallic silver heat-applied graphics, which will provide superior durability.
